A History of Growth through Acquisition

JDA got its start as JDA Software Services Ltd., founded in Alberta, Canada in 1978 by James D. Armstrong. After growing into one of Canada’s largest IBM mid-range software providers, the company was sold in 1985. Later that year Armstrong and a partner formed the U.S.-based JDA Software, Inc. in Cleveland, Ohio.

The early business focused on delivering high-quality packaged software and consulting services to meet the information and transaction needs of the U.S. retail industry. After 10 years as a successful privately held firm, JDA went public in 1996, trading on the NASDAQ stock exchange under the symbol JDAS. That same year, JDA repurchased the original Canadian JDA business.

In 1998, JDA began to strategically expand its solutions offerings through complementary acquisitions. By purchasing Arthur Retail, JDA established itself as the market leader in advanced planning and allocation.

JDA initiated a strategic plan in 2000 to expand its solutions to consumer goods manufacturing and distribution. During a period of aggressive growth through acquisition, JDA acquired eight companies, most notably Intactix,a market leader in space management solutions, and E3, a global pacesetter in inventory optimization.

When JDA acquired Manugistics in 2006, the company gained strength in supply and demand management, pricing and logistics. As a result, JDA was uniquely positioned to help companies become more consumer-driven. The combined solutions of JDA and Manugistics offered customers new insights into consumer buying behaviors and patterns, enabling responsiveness to market changes. Additionally, JDA could now help companies in the passenger travel, cargo and freight, hospitality, leisure and entertainment and media industries improve profits by balancing supply and demand with innovative forecasting, pricing and revenue management solutions.

In 2010, the company’s acquisition of i2 Technologies brought together two market leaders, expanding JDA’s geographic and industry footprint, enhancing its supply chain service and support offerings, as well as increasing its ability to provide the industry’s most comprehensive, integrated supply chain offering. The addition of i2’s extensive global customer base and robust, patented manufacturing, supply chain, retail and transportation solutions solidified JDA’s position as one of the world’s leading supply chain technology providers.
