JDA acquired i2 Technologies in January 2010, establishing the company as a global market leader of supply chain management software and services, with more than 6,000 customers. i2’s solutions have enabled JDA to expand its market reach to include discrete manufacturing and extend its leadership in transportation. As a result, JDA is uniquely positioned to provide a broad, seamless portfolio of products and services for the manufacturing, wholesale distribution, retail and services industries. The combination of the two companies also enhanced JDA’s global scope and increased its scale for specialization in managed services, on-demand and emerging delivery models.
Prior to the acquisition, i2 was a leading global provider of supply chain solutions, with offices in 15 countries. i2’s software and services helped companies in the manufacturing, transportation and retail sectors optimize key business processes for maximum profitability. Those global market leaders — which span a wide range of industries including aerospace and defense, automotive, consumer goods, high-tech, industrial, metals, retail, transportation and logistics — used i2 supply chain solutions to increase revenue growth, reduce costs and improve supply chain efficiency.
i2 was founded in 1988 by Sanjiv Sidhu and Ken Sharma, two visionaries in what would eventually be known as the practice of supply chain management. Sidhu and Sharma sought to expand enterprise application software beyond traditional enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, which were basically transaction accounting and processing systems. As their first step beyond ERP, they developed an advanced planning and scheduling application that considered actual production constraints to improve the flow of materials within a factory and offered more sophisticated monitoring, decision-support and execution capabilities. The passion to apply technology and best practices to eliminate inefficiencies in business was at the heart of what helped i2 grow to become a leader in supply chain management, where the company successfully implemented its solutions at a broad cross-section of market leaders including Bell Helicopter, HP, JCPenney, General Motors, Procter & Gamble, Penske Logistics, PepsiCo, Ryder, Samsung, Southwest Airlines and U. S. Steel, among others.
Throughout its more than 20-year history i2 invested in excess of $1 billion in research and development, resulting in a broad solution footprint delivering some of the industry’s leading supply chain management technology. The company held more than 160 patents related to planning, scheduling optimization, demand fulfillment, collaboration, e-commerce and data management and reporting in its solution portfolio.
The acquisition allowed JDA to combine i2’s patented technology, industry knowledge and proven best practices — along with its other acquired brands — to enhance its rich heritage of customer success and value delivery.
